Astro Photography & Stargazing Breaks
Starry Skies & Cosmic Views In Pembrokeshire's Night Skies
If you're searching for wide-open skies and breathtaking views of the stars, Pembrokeshire is one of the best places in the UK to look up. With low light pollution and panoramic coastal horizons, it’s a dream spot for stargazers and astrophotographers alike.
In fact, parts of Pembrokeshire have been officially recognised as Dark Sky Discovery Sites - some even rated as “Milky Way” class, meaning the core of our galaxy is visible to the naked eye on clear, moonless nights. You’ll find several top-rated locations for stargazing within easy reach of Lamphey Court Hotel.
Among the favourites are...
- Broad Haven South - A brilliant cliff-top spot with open views and very little artificial light.
- Martin’s Haven - Known for its unspoiled darkness and excellent visibility across the sea.
- Newgale, Skrinkle Haven, Poppit Sands, Garn Fawr, and Kete - All designated Dark Sky Discovery locations.
The best stargazing happens during the new moon phase, when the skies are darkest. Spring and summer are ideal for catching the Milky Way’s glow, while autumn and winter bring meteor showers like the Orionids and Geminids.
And yes - Pembrokeshire is one of the few places in southern Britain where the Northern Lights can sometimes be seen. It’s rare, but thanks to our coastal position and clear northern views, there have been more sightings in recent years, especially during strong solar activity. It’s always worth keeping an eye on the aurora forecasts just in case you get lucky.
If you’re into photography, you’ll find plenty of foreground interest too. Cliff edges, twisted trees, old buildings and wide seascapes all make for great compositions. Apps like Stellarium or Sky Guide are handy for lining up your shots and timing exposures perfectly.
There are often stargazing events run by local astronomy groups and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park team too, with guided night walks and beginner-friendly sessions – a great way to learn more about the skies with a bit of local insight.
So, whether you’re just stepping outside the hotel for a bit of peaceful night sky watching, or planning a late-night photo shoot, Pembrokeshire’s night skies offer something truly unforgettable.
If you're thinking of planning a trip to Pembrokeshire for a blood moon, a glimpse of the Milky Way or just for a relaxing countryside escape, why not take a look at our hotel? We'd love to see what amazing photos you capture during your stay.
Important note: These stargazing spots are suggestions based on public access and visibility, but conditions can, and regularly do, change - please do your own research and plan accordingly. Take extra care at night near cliffs or coastal paths: use a torch, stay on marked routes, avoid unfamiliar areas in the dark, and make sure you let people know you're going and that you have the emergency service numbers saved to your phone.
