The Story Behind Lamphey Court Hotel

A Georgian Gem With A Rich Past

Lamphey Court Hotel's 200 Years Of Pembrokeshire Heritage

Lamphey Court Hotel & Spa isn’t just a beautiful place to stay; it’s also a part of Pembrokeshire’s history.

This grand Georgian mansion, set quietly in the countryside near the coast, has been overlooking the village of Lamphey since 1823.

It was originally built as a private residence for Charles Delamotte Mathias, a member of a well-known local family. The house was designed in the popular Greek Revival style, featuring tall columns, a whitewashed stone exterior, and a perfectly balanced façade that immediately catches the eye. Inside, many original features remain today, including the sweeping staircase with decorative ironwork and tall ceilings that open into elegant reception rooms with polished rosewood doors.

The Mathias family lived here for more than a century.

Several members held important local roles, including High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire. The family eventually sold the house in 1978, when Wing Commander Lewis Mathias passed it on. It wasn’t long before the next chapter began, and the building was transformed into a hotel.

In the early 1980s, careful restorations and thoughtful extensions helped shape Lamphey Court into the hotel and spa it is today. Modern comforts were added, but the building’s character and charm were kept intact. Guests can now enjoy peaceful countryside surroundings, stylish rooms, and spa treatments, all within the walls of a property that’s full of heritage.

The grounds around the hotel are also of historic interest and are listed alongside the nearby ruins of Lamphey Bishop’s Palace. These landscaped gardens include formal terraces, ornamental ponds, and mature trees that reflect the estate’s original 19th-century layout. The palace ruins themselves are only a short stroll away, adding to the timeless atmosphere of the whole area.

Lamphey Court today offers more than just a place to relax. It’s a building that holds nearly 200 years of local stories, and every stay here is a chance to be part of that continuing history... so why not be part of its future and enjoy a break at Lamphey Court Hotel?
